Iio Jozo Vinegar Brewery

Their products are found at Michelin-star restaurants worldwide, and for good reason. They manage the entire process of vinegar brewing from start to finish, beginning with the growing of their own pesticide-free rice.

Onojin Soy Sauce Factory

An amazing soy sauce brewery quite close to Mineyama train station in Kyotango City, an area known for longevity and wellness. They make their soy sauce by hand and age it up to three years. They also make excellent miso and offer tastings at the brewery/shop.


Hot Springs

Japan is well-known for its hot springs, and Kyoto by the Sea is no exception. Much of the coastline rests along a UNESCO Global Geopark that was once volcanic millions of years ago. There are still many natural vents where natural hot springs issue up through the earth, giving visitors the benefits of healing hot spring waters, as well as stunning sea views. Here are a few locations in Kyoto by the Sea where visitors can soak in hot springs and relax for a couple of hours during their journey:

Ukawa Onsen

Overlooking the sea, with two restaurants, accommodations, and local produce and handmade crafts.

*Ukawa Onsen is currently under renovation until March, 2021.

Ayabe Onsen

Located in the forests of Ayabe, quite close to national treasure Niomon Gate and corresponding Komyoji Temple, Ayabe Onsen is a great location for some forest therapy. The onsen also has accommodations, a restaurant, local products, and hiking trails close by that lead to the aformentioned temple sites as well as an ancient Japanese Horse Chestnut Tree.

Kurhaus Iwataki

Located near Amanohashidate, Kurhaus has a variety of water activities. There is a pool in addition to hot spring facilities and a restaurant as well.

Ashiginu Onsen

Located in a village that filled with rice fields, including some varieties of ancient red rice that are still being grown, Ashiginu Onsen has some unique baths and steaming options at their facility. The restaurant also serves some local specialties, and there is a shop where you can purchase local goods.
